The upcoming 249th birthday of the United States is fast approaching. If you plan on celebrating here in Bend, there is no shortage of holiday activities.
From pet parades to fireworks and all activities in between, there’s plenty of fun to be had this Fourth of July here in Bend.
The inherent dangers of holidays
While holidays remain a great way to celebrate and mark occasions with family and friends, the increased traffic on the road at this time and the proliferation of alcohol don’t make a good mix.
When these two elements — driving and booze — mix, people suffer needless injuries and death in serious car accidents.
Drunk driving injuries 100% preventable
It’s been said that alcohol-related wrecks are the only preventable crashes. While some collisions may be inevitable due to road conditions or faulty car parts, drunken driving accidents are fully attributable to alcohol consumption on the part of the driver(s).
How to protect yourself and your family
Whenever possible, stay off the roads at peak driving times around holiday celebrations. Arrange to stay overnight with your hosts after celebrating with alcohol or mind-altering drugs or reserve a room at a local motel after the fireworks are over. Only drive sober and never agree to ride home with a driver who has consumed alcohol.
If you see a drunk driver on the road
Often, it’s not you who raises the risk of driving but the other drivers you encounter en route to your destination. If you see a car being driven badly, pull over and make a report to law enforcement. Never try to engage a drugged or drunken driver in a confrontation, as it could escalate into real violence and harm. Leave that job to the police and protect your family from harm.
If you get into a wreck
Never admit guilt (or apologize) at the scene. Get medical treatment to document injuries for the damage claim to follow.
